Not preparing the equipment and lacking tests before the event starts exposes you to troubleshooting translation issues after it has begun. In such a situation, all attention from participants, speakers, and the organizer focuses on you instead of the speaker.

 

Below we describe step by step how to prepare and test the equipment using the popular model Okayo WaveTalk as an example.

 

Preparing the transmitter and microphone

 

1. Connect the chosen microphone to the transmitter (white equipment) using the jack connector. The socket is located on the top wall of the transmitter, next to the antenna.
2. Press and hold the ON/OFF button (located between the microphone socket and the antenna) for about 1 second to turn on the transmitter.

Preparing the receiver and headphones

 

1. Unpack the disinfected headphones and connect them to the receiver (black equipment) using the jack connector. The socket is located on the top wall of the receiver, next to the antenna.
2. Turn on the receiver using the ON/OFF button (located between the microphone socket and the antenna).

Testing the equipment's operation

 

While speaking into the microphone, your voice should be clearly heard in the headphones connected to the receiver. You can adjust the volume in the headphones using the buttons on the side of the receiver:

• "+" – increase volume
• "-" – decrease volume

 

Adjusting the microphone gain (if the sound is too quiet)

 

If, despite raising the volume on the receiver, the sound is still too quiet, you need to increase the microphone gain on the transmitter:

1. On the transmitter (white equipment), press and hold the "+" button for about 2 seconds.
2. Once the lock icon (padlock) disappears from the display, you can adjust the microphone level.
   • "+" – increase gain
   • "-" – decrease gain
3. The set gain level is displayed as U1–U5.

 

Checking the battery level

 

After turning on the equipment, check the battery indicator:

• If the LED lights up red or only one bar is visible on the display, it indicates a low charge level.
• Such equipment should be charged before use.

 

Distributing receivers to participants

 

After confirming that the equipment is working correctly, you can proceed to distribute the receivers. It is best to do this using a list with the receiver numbers, writing down the participant's name and contact phone number. This way, in case of no return, you can quickly contact them.

 

Positioning during the event

 

The translator should position themselves near the speaker to hear their statements well. Participants can be anywhere in the room – the quality of translation does not depend on their distance from the translator.
